What songs do I need for my wedding ceremony?
There are several categories of music to consider when planning your wedding soundtrack. The first is your prelude, which is a background list of songs playing while guests arrive and take their seats. Next, you will pick out songs for your family and wedding party (if applicable) to walk down the aisle to as well as a song just for you. Sometimes the groom gets a song too! During the ceremony you may have a unity ritual and you may want a background song played so there isn’t an awkward silence. Once you’re married you’ll want something fun to recess out to as a married couple!
Who picks the music at a wedding?
You do! Your DJ is there to play what you want to hear. But, you don’t have to pick and choose every song. All you need to do is have a basic idea of what you want plus some of your favorite dance tunes. The key is to collaborate with your DJ and work together so everyone is on the same page.
How do I pick my wedding reception music?
- After the ceremony, you should choose more upbeat happier songs
- Play your softer type songs for dinner, maybe some sing-a-longs
- Make sure your formality songs (1st dance, parent dances, etc.) have special meaning
- Communicate with your DJ what you want your dance time to look like with 10-15 of your favorite party tunes and some general do’s and don’ts of what not to play or not play
The Lyrics, what DO they say? they might not fit what you want
Not every song is grandma appropriate. Most songs have clean versions available so you shouldn’t have to stress over explicit lyrics. It’s also important to filter songs that have super inappropriate lyrics. “Like A Virgin” has no place in a wedding reception!
